Introduction

The Sculpture executes the image on the surface of stone by working on the compendium of contour lines developed on the basis of various iconographical abstracts. Working on the stone, he makes various stone particles submerge into definite form and shape, thus creating an image which manifests an icon of a deity so revered by many. Sculpture is created by the stone as well as the iconographical text. The viewer neither sees the stone nor thinks of the iconographical texts while viewing the sculpture. The artist sees only the image of a worshipable deity. With the simple tool of a chisel and continuous strokes of a hammer, the experienced artisan moulds the stone and his vision form of divinity.

Each and every artist has a particular way of self expression. The creative mind inherent in the artist is expressed in the beauty in a way which suits the temperament and ideals of his culture. The traditional artists of Nepal had always reflected socio-religious and spiritual concepts in their works. The creation of beautiful nature is always emphasised. The inner apperception of beauty, the subtle and mysterious way of self expression of young Nepalese traditional artists mind is unfolded here in the present works of sculptor Dharma Raj Shakya.
