  4. CD-ROM business directory will help boost Nepal's foreign trade
    Himalayan News Service
    Kathmandu, April 30

To promote Nepali market abroad, OnlyAtNepal Pvt. Ltd. released a CD-ROM called "Nepal Business Directory 2002", here at a programme on Tuesday, jointly organised by OnlyAtNepal Pvt. Ltd and The Federation of Nepal Cottage and Small Scale Industries (FNCSI).

The directory, providing a database of Nepali businesses, has been created with a view to establishing business ties between Nepali and foreign entrepreneurs. The organisers emphasised that it will be freely distributed in the global market.

At a time when there is a major slump in the country's economy, industrialists call for promoting local items on the international market through information technology. They argue that since the world market has gone global with the click of a mouse, Nepal is not yet even' e-commerce savvy'.

Business in the past eight months of the current fiscal year has dropped by 8.5 per cent compared to the previous year. Out of 1,40,006 registered cottage and small-scale industries (CSI) with an investment of Rs. 7.5 billion, the registration of 55000 industries have been cancelled. Although most of the industries produce export-oriented items, they do not have access to the international market, directly as a result of not utilising the Internet to disseminate information through the relevant web sites.

The CD-ROM provides information on the "searchable database of Nepalese businesses," details of Nepali and bilateral business associations, commodities manufactured by CSI and tourism entrepreneurs. Potential consumers can directly contact manufacturers and entrepreneurs. The directory is also designed to promote the Destination Campaign Nepal 2002/2003 and the Export Nepal Year 2003.

Only a limited number of CSIs show growth patterns, but their business is limited due to their inaccessibility to foreign markets. They pointed out that making copies of CD-ROMs available outside the country is a first step to developing the international market for local products.

Speaking at the programme, Basudev Giri, President of FNCSI said that the availability of the directory in the international market could boost the country's sagging economy. The Nepali business environment, already crippled by the Maoist insurgency is heading towards a great economic tragedy unless it is saved from further damage said Ravi Bhakta Shrestha, president of Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI)
